Second James Taylor Concert for Haiti Added
by Seth Rogovoy
(Great Barrington, Mass.) – Due to overwhelming demand, James Taylor has agreed to perform a second benefit concert for Haitian relief on Saturday, Jan 23, at 8 at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. Tickets to the previously announced Friday night show sold out within 90 minutes of going on sale Tuesday morning. Tickets to Saturday night's concert are $100 (upper balcony), $200 (orchestra and mezzanine), and $1,000 (golden circle including private post-show reception with the artists) and will go on sale on Wednesday, January 20 at 9am via www.mahaiwe.org and in person at the Mahaiwe Box Office (14 Castle Street in Great Barrington). No phone sales are available for this concert. Limit four tickets per person.
Proceeds from both concerts, “Help for Haiti: An Intimate Evening with James Taylor,” will benefit Partners in Health (www.pih.org). With Kim and James Taylor matching the box-office receipts of Friday night's show, the community effort has already raised $300,000 for the organization.
Upon hearing news of the sold-out concert, Taylor volunteered to donate his services for a second show on Saturday. “The need in Haiti is so great, and our community in the Berkshires is so generous. Performing another concert is the least I can do, and, fortunately, the Mahaiwe is free the next night,” he said.
The rare, acoustic solo concerts will feature Taylor performing before a crowd of about 700 in the recently restored, century-old playhouse, accompanied by longtime backup vocalists Kate Markowitz and Arnold McCuller, his wife, Kim Taylor, and Boston Symphony Orchestra cellist and frequent sideman Owen Young.
Partners In Health (PIH) has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. The organization works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in nine countries around the world. The work of PIH has three goals: to care for patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world. Based in Boston, PIH employs more than 11,000 people worldwide, including doctors, nurses, and community health workers. The vast majority of PIH staff are local nationals based in the communities they serve.
